The Mine Watch Initiative

The Mine Watch Initiative, a new programmatic area of interest, aims to address the limited public understanding of the myriad of social, environmental, and development issues associated with mining in Liberia. It works to bring to public attention impacts of key mining companies operating in Liberia and the track records of those seeking entry into the country. The SDI in partnership with members of the Global Action on ArcelorMittal (GAAM) is currently assessing ArcelorMittal’s activities, focusing on compliance with corporate social responsibility and environmental obligations in their contract. A full assessment of mining sector is also ongoing and information gathered will shape civil society work in the sector.
